Hertford County Arrest History
The Hertford County Sheriff's Office, Ahoskie Police, Murfreesboro Police, Winton Police, Chowan University Public Safety, State Highway Patrol, and Wildlife enforcement officers may create arrest records here. The agency that made the arrest keeps its incident or arrest report. If custody follows, the Hertford County Detention Center creates the booking layer. A magistrate records judicial process and release conditions, while the clerk opens a District or Superior Court case only if charges move into court.
These files overlap, but none replaces the others. A report describes the agency's account of an event. Booking proves that intake occurred at a point in time. A court case shows what prosecutors filed and how each charge ended. The SBI repository links a fingerprint-supported arrest cycle to dispositions that agencies and courts report. A useful Hertford County arrest lookup therefore begins by deciding which layer is needed.
No Hertford Online Booking Log
Hertford County does not publish a searchable jail roster or complete recent-arrest blotter. The same is true of the official Ahoskie and Murfreesboro channels reviewed for this project. A “Most Wanted” post or press release is selective public-safety material, not a full list of arrests. Its silence does not show that a person was never arrested or is not now in custody.
For current county custody, call Inmate Information at 252-358-7840. The official local source confirms that staff provide current charge and condition-of-release or bond information by phone. Have the person's full name ready and, if known, a date of birth or approximate booking time. Staff decide which identifiers they can use and which details may be released.
Note: Hertford County confirms charge and bond access by phone, but it does not promise a public mugshot, booking number, or court date.
Looking Up Hertford County Arrests
No single channel holds the whole Hertford County arrest history. Start with the jail for current custody, then move back to the arresting agency for event details or forward to the court for prosecution. A statewide self-review is a separate fingerprint process. This order keeps a recent intake record from being confused with a later court outcome.
- Call the Detention Center at 252-358-7840 for present custody, current charges, and bond or release conditions.
- Contact the arresting agency for public arrest or incident particulars. Use the sheriff for a sheriff-created event and the city police department for its own report.
- Search eCourts after a case is filed, then use the Hertford courthouse channel for an official document or disposition.
- For your own fingerprint-linked statewide North Carolina history, use SBI Right to Review with the required ten-print card and $14 payment.
- When direct contact does not resolve the request, send the custodian a focused written request by mail or its directed electronic route.
A written request should identify the record type, date range, location, involved agency, subject name, and incident, case, or booking number if known. State whether inspection or copies are wanted, select paper or electronic format, and ask for a cost estimate. Hertford County publishes no fixed sheriff copy fee or response time, so confirm both with the custodian.
Hertford Arrest Agency Routes
The source agency is the right place for its arrest report. A person arrested by Ahoskie Police may be booked in Winton and later appear in a clerk file, yet the original agency report remains with Ahoskie. Murfreesboro Police operates around the clock, with its public safety lobby listed for weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Chowan University Public Safety keeps campus reports and a daily log.
| Arresting Agency | Records Route | Official Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Hertford County Sheriff | Call, mail, or visit Sheriff headquarters | 701 N Taylor St; 252-358-7800 |
| Ahoskie Police | Call the department; no official report portal found | PO Box 767; 252-332-5011 |
| Murfreesboro Police | Call or use the public safety lobby | 115 E Broad St; 252-398-4151 |
| Winton Police | Start with Town Hall to identify the current custodian | 252-358-3041 |
| Chowan University Public Safety | Campus report or daily-log request | 110 Hawks Dr; 252-398-1234 |
State Highway Patrol and Wildlife enforcement records follow their own official state contact routes. Asking the sheriff for every local police report can delay the search because the county jail's custody record is not the arresting agency's full incident file.
Inside a Hertford County Arrest Record
An agency arrest record may contain an incident number, arrest date and place, arresting agency and officer, alleged offense, statute, warrant or warrantless basis, narrative references, evidence or property references, and transport destination. The booking file then adds intake data. Local phone disclosure is narrower than the full internal file, and investigation, victim, juvenile, medical, fingerprint, and classification material can be withheld or protected.
| Incident or Booking Number | Agency or jail identifier when one exists; the county does not promise it as a public phone field. |
|---|---|
| Arrest and Intake Time | Shows when the arrest and jail intake occurred; the two times serve different records. |
| Arresting Agency | Identifies the custodian of the incident or arrest report. |
| Charges | Lists alleged or intake charges, which may differ from later filed charges. |
| Bond or Release | Current charge and release-condition information is confirmed by phone. |
| Booking Photograph | A photograph may exist in intake files, but no official Hertford public mugshot product was confirmed. |
| Release Status | Custody or release events may be recorded; call the jail for current information. |
Never treat a booking photograph or intake charge as proof that prosecutors filed the same allegation. The Hertford County criminal court case shows filed charges and their results.
Hertford Detention Arrest Records
The Hertford County Detention Center is at 701 North Taylor Street in Winton. Its rated capacity is 92, with 50 male cell-block spaces, 36 female spaces, and seven isolation cells listed by the county. Those figures describe the facility, not the number of people held on a given day. Detention staff do not set bond, change court dates, determine guilt, or impose punishment.

701 North Taylor Street
Winton, NC 27986
Inmate Information: 252-358-7840
Detention command: 252-358-7862
The Detention Center answers county-jail questions. It should not be confused with the state prison and supervision database. No official remote-visitation vendor, deposit vendor, phone vendor, or exact inmate-mail format was confirmed, so call the facility rather than relying on a third-party instruction page.
Booking Logs and Recent Arrests
Without a public Hertford booking log, a recent arrest must be traced office by office. First identify the arresting agency and request the public arrest or incident particulars. Next call the jail for present custody, charge, and bond information. Use the Hertford County court page after the clerk receives a filed case. For a certified document or disposition, contact the clerk at 252-358-7100.
This chain also explains time gaps. The officer's report can exist before jail intake. Booking can occur before the prosecutor files a case. A filed court charge can differ from the intake charge. The SBI may receive fingerprints before it receives a matching disposition. A missing item in one system may reflect timing or mismatched identifiers rather than proof that no event occurred.
Hertford Arrests Reach the SBI
Booking fingerprints supply the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation with an identity-based arrest cycle and tracking reference. The cycle can later carry a disposition reported from the court. This fingerprint link makes the state repository different from a name search of public dockets. The SBI offers no unrestricted public name portal for its central criminal-history file.
The SBI Criminal Information and Identification Section describes that repository role.
A person may review their own North Carolina record through SBI Right to Review. The request requires the form, a complete ten-print fingerprint card, identifying information, and a $14 certified check or money order.
State Custody After Hertford Arrest
Once a sentenced person enters state prison or community supervision, use the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction Offender Public Information Search. It contains prison, probation, parole, and post-release information back to 1972. It expressly excludes Hertford County jail custody, so a missing result there says nothing about a recent stay at the Winton detention center.
The official NCDAC Offender Locator displays the state search interface.
NC SAVAN or VINELink provides custody notifications by phone, email, text, or TTY. Use the jail line for present county custody and the state locator only for NCDAC records.
Arrests Are Not Convictions
An arrest establishes that an agency took a person into custody or otherwise made an arrest. It does not decide guilt. Prosecutors may decline or amend charges, and a court may dismiss a charge, acquit the defendant, defer a result, or enter judgment on a different offense. A booking event may remain in agency files after dismissal until an applicable expunction directs removal.
| Arrest Record | Conviction Record |
|---|---|
| Created by the arresting agency and jail | Created through the court's judgment |
| Shows an arrest or booking occurred | Shows a finding of guilt |
| Lives with the agency and booking custodian | Lives in the clerk file and may reach SBI |
| May be followed by release, no filing, dismissal, or another result | May lead to sentence, appeal, or qualifying expunction |
Note: An arrest is not proof of guilt, and the filed charge or final court result may differ from the booking entry.
Federal Custody Beyond Hertford Arrests
Federal custody is another separate layer. The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator searches federal custody records, not the Hertford jail or NCDAC. Rivers Correctional Institution near Winton has historical ties to federal contract custody, but that history is not proof that a specific person is now held there. Current status must come from the federal source.
The BOP Inmate Locator provides the official federal search form.
This federal route is useful only after confirming that the question concerns federal custody. It cannot fill gaps in a Hertford County arrest or booking record.
