For a wildcard name search, official Portal guidance calls for at least three surname characters before an asterisk and at least one given-name character before its asterisk. Judgment search behaves differently, so use the exact case number when possible. Search Hearings can locate a future setting, but the calendar alone does not establish the full case history or final outcome.

Portal masks dates of birth and does not display Social Security numbers. Victim identifiers, confidential juvenile information, sealed content, protective records, and unreturned warrants can also be restricted.

An expunction filing belongs with the clerk in the county of charge or conviction. Eligibility depends on the exact offense, result, age, prior record, and statutory waiting rule.
Case Record Access and Restrictions
G.S. 7A-109 makes clerk-maintained records open during regular office hours unless another law restricts them. That access does not expose every part of every file. Juvenile cases, expunged or sealed matters, protected-order information, unreturned warrants, confidential documents, full Social Security numbers, and some victim details remain outside ordinary public access.
